Varkarola festival.
“Varkarola” means “serenade under the moonlight” and happens in Kalami on the last Sunday of July every year. Its origin is very old and has strong connections with the islands love of its people, music and singing, their daily lives and love for sea and nature. The event takes place due to the dedication of its locals who so rightly wish to preserve their traditions.
The local choral group “Apollon” bring back its musical custom accompanied by one or two traditional instruments usually consisting of a guitar and violin.
Along with the choir, at night, small boats decorated with fairy lights can be seen approaching the beach as music fill the air.
21st May - Gimari festival.
This takes place every year in Gimari, situated approximately 1 km from Kalami. It celebrates the name day of St. Helene and Konstantinos, and is also the name of a local church. This vibrant celebration has local music in abundance, food and wines.
16th July - Festival of traditional village pie.
A change from traditional festivals, this is a tradition for many years in the village of Gimari. The local ladies make traditional cheese and spinach pies and also ones filled with meat, fish, potatoes, vegetables, chicken and many surprise fillengs! Along with local music and dance, there is a barbeque with lamd and souvlaki, and plenty of local wines.
August the 15th - Kassiopi festival.
Situated approx. 6 km. from Kalami, this festival celebrates the assumption of the Virgin Mary, this is also a national festival, so as with others is full of local music, dance, food, and drinks to wash it all down with! |
