Corfu Island

Known as the Emerald isle, it's the greenest of the Ionian Islands. Patchwork foothills covered in ancient olive grooves contrast with tiny pebble bays and sandy shores. Corfu town with its neoclassic and Italian style buildings, its colonnaded arcades, elegant pavement cafes and the Espianade -once a Venetian parade ground- is a mixture of cosmopolitan sophistication and relaxed Greek simplicity. And you take your pick from resorts with lovely nightlife to peaceful villages with local tavernas.

Corfu is the second largest island of the Ionian Islands. It is the most northerly of the islands which are set off the west coast of Greece. Corfu is a mountainous island 60 kilometres long covering an area of 542 square kilometres. The highest mountain is Pantokrator, which is 914 meters high. There are several flat areas and two lakes Korision and Antionioti. There are also 4 small rivers which are often dry in the summer months.
The climate is mild with humid summers. The heavy rainfall and the humidity gives the island lots of vegetation and it is often referred to as the Emerald isle.
The main industry in Corfu is tourism followed by agriculture. The main agricultural produce are olive oil, wine and citrus fruit.
